Aust. GreenLaboUr climate tax fraud goes forward…

And so, the Australian GreenLaboUr Government’s carbon(sic) tax fraud bungles on…

Gillard pledge 2010:

“There will be no carbon (sic) tax under a government I lead.”

Climate Change talks to be in secret

THE deliberations of a multi-party climate change committee will be kept secret until an agreement is reached because they are economically sensitive.

Gillard, Rudd celebrate as carbon bill passes parliament

Labor and independent MPs broke into applause as the hotly-contested bills passed the Lower House by 74 votes to 72 after weeks of debate.

Amid the celebrations, there was a show of public solidarity as Mr Rudd planted a kiss on the cheek of Ms Gillard, the person who took his job and, by some reports, the person whose job he wants back.

Not With a Bang But a Whimper

So the long-running soap opera called Australian Climate Politics has reached its surprising end.

The Australian government has announced that it will abandon its plans to transition its newly implemented carbon tax into an Australian emissions trading system, and sign on the the European ETS.

There is no other way to read the Australian government’s decision other than that Prime Minister Gillard crying “uncle” and punting the issue far into the future.

How does this play out?

Visit Roger Pielke, Jr.’s blog page for a good assessment.

The political challenges thus far facing passage of emissions reduction legislation in Australia, and its almost certain destiny to fail to achieve emissions reduction targets of the magnitude described here, should serve as an important lesson to climate policy makers around the world.

The Australian soap opera provides some clear lessons on efforts to price carbon at a high level to drive behavioral change.

UPDATE. 3/09/2012:

Rushed carbon permit auction to prop up budget

The federal government plans to bolster its sagging budget bottom line by a near tripling of the auction of carbon emissions permits in 2013-14.

The government announced last Tuesday that it would remove a $15 floor price on carbon from 2015 and link to the European Union emissions trading scheme.

… they will also make it harder for a Coalition government to repeal the scheme and cancel companies’ permits.

Aust. CSIRO Snow/Ski report: 9 years on. Fail.

Just for the record:

A 2003 CSIRO report, part-funded by the ski industry, found that the resorts could lose a quarter of their snow in 15 years, and half by 2050.

The worst case was a 96 per cent loss of snow by mid-century.

“Climate change is happening,” says Fairley.

“It is a live issue, not something that may happen in 10 or 20 or 100 years.

It is with us now, as we stand in the lift queue.

Modelling for 2020 and 2050 shows that the resort with the most remaining snow will be Perisher, in NSW, followed in order by Falls Creek, Mount Hotham, Thredbo and Mount Buller.

So, nine years on in 2012, how are the snow field resorts?

August 30, 2012

THE Victorian Alps are crowned with fresh snow and ski resorts are gearing up for the best spring in eight years.

Heavy snowfalls this month have left Hotham with 186 centimetres of natural snow, the best coverage since 2004.

It is only the fourth time in 20 years there has been so much snow this late in August.

Dumping in Oz

Saturday September 1, 2012

2012 looks set to go down as one of the best in Australia for snowfall for a while.

It meant that the resort passed the 2m snow depth mark for the first time since winter 2004.

And after another 38cm of snow last weekend, Mt Hotham in Victoria reported its natural snow depth had reached 1.91m – not far off the 2m mark, a level not reached there since 2004 either.

Megablizzard returns with yet more snow for Australia in incredible meteorological mirror image

“The megablizzard returns this weekend – bigger, stronger and quite possibly snowier than the blizzard earlier this week which delivered the heaviest June snowfalls of the century.”

June 30, 2014:

The Big Chill is going nowhere

“The cold turn has delivered bumper snow in the alps, with 112cm of new snow falling in Falls Creek last week – the largest June snowfall since 1991.”

Australian Snow Statistics

The Australian ski season goes from June to October but be aware that Australian snow falls are highly variable, as illustrated in the first graph.

The good news is that, averaged over several years, the snow falls do not seem to be getting worse and a very good dump seems to occur every few years.

* Picking, in advance, which years are “good” seems impossible.

However, just like going to the horse races, it pays to know the “odds” that a particular week of the year will be good – that’s what this site is about – averaging the conditions over many years.

Climate Frauds UN-IPCC exposed quoting fraudulently adjusted temperature data in court.

At a stroke this case may affirm that up to one quarter of our planet’s climate records have been fraudulently audited.

New Zealand skeptics of man-made global warming score historic legal victory as discredited government climate scientists perform U-turn and refuse to allow a third party peer-review report of official temperature adjustments to be shown in court.

New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) are reeling after what may prove a fatally embarrassing admission that it is breaking a solemn undertaking given to parliament.

As such, this would bring a swift victory for skeptics with profound legal ramifications around the world.

In the sparsely-measured southern hemisphere the New Zealand climate data is critical to claims about a verified global temperature record.

Climate change deniers swamped in NIWA court challenge

“The plaintiff does not succeed on any of its challenges to the three decisions of NIWA in issue. The application for judicial review is dismissed and judgment entered for the defendant.”

Justice Venning says Dunleavy “has no applicable qualifications” and “his interest in the area does not sufficiently qualify him as an expert”.

He also questioned the credentials of Bob Dedekind, a computer modelling and statistical analyst whose “general expertise in basic statistical techniques does not extend to any particular specialised experience of qualifications in the specific field of applying statistical techniques in the field of climate science”.

Joannenova , 7 Sept. 2012:

The NZ court case of skeptics versus NIWA has come down against the skeptics.

“By ruling that the evidence from Terry Dunleavy, and Bob Dedekind was inadmissible on the grounds of qualification, Justice Venning has done two things: a) he has apparently left the door open for an appeal or other form or review (precident might be an interesting thread to follow); and b) he has removed himself from the matter, and is no longer involved or able to comment.”

UPDATE 12 Sept. 2012:
UPDATE 15 Sept. 2012:
A judge has thrown out a legal challenge by climate change sceptics, which accused Government scientists of manipulating data.
Wratt is a senior member of the IPCC, the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change, and is in agreement with the majority of the world’s climate scientists who say human-induced climate change is happening all around us and that the warming of the Earth and acidification of the oceans is reaching a critical stage.
Wratt’s frustration is not just at the sceptics but also at the attention they receive, given they are the minority.
The New Zealand Climate and Health Council, which says it has 150 medical professionals as members, said groups like the Climate Science Coalition were “still peddling lies that kill, they are delaying action essential to protect human health”.
